Subtractive Series

In Search of Lost Time, Marcel Proust.

Encor Studio explores the tension between presence and absence, where human perception replaces physical objects and leaves an intangible trace, challenging the boundaries of memory and experience.

Their work often reflects the idea of what is lost or unspoken—exploring how the past reveals its true significance through involuntary memory—those fleeting moments resurfacing unexpectedly, reminding us of what we failed to cherish.

Rather than simply revealing, the work conceals—modulating light and transparency across glass façades to veil and unveil the inside and the outside, mirroring the way memory dissolves and resurfaces. Aligned with their recent Subtractive Series, their work embraces simplicity and energy efficiency, transforming the space itself into a living canvas where absence speaks as powerfully as presence.

Additive VS Subtractive

LESS IS MORE
As audiovisual artists, we were usually working in "additive" mode. Adding more lights, more elements and material. We felt like stuck in a never ending hyper consumption cycle, alimenting the machine. More gear that calls for more gear. We wanted to find a new way.

MINIMALISM
With this new series we've pioneered an innovative technique using liquid electrochromic crystal film, set on large glass panels. For the first time in our career, we can work now in a "subtractive" mode.We seek to remove and conceal elements, thereby creating ample space for the environment, the spectator, and their imagination to thrive. We use the sun as a powerful source and element. This deliberate choice allows us to distance ourselves from the culture of excess and overconsumption that invaded modern creative practices.

NEGATIVE SPACE
By including the surroundings to become part of the installationThe space around our work enriches the piece, and thus every art piece is affected and different.
